Kazunori Kataoka and colleagues publish paper on ‘chemical surgery’ for cancer treatment.

Professor Kazunori Kataoka at the University of Tokyo and Innovation Center of NanoMedicine (iCONM, KING SKYFRONT, Kawasaki), and COINS*1 Researchers demonstrate the effectiveness of selectively delivering gadolinium (Gd) based nanomachines to cancer tissues for MRI diagnosis and neutron capture therapy, in the journal ACS Nano published on 1st of June, 2015.

This “surgery without cutting” (“chemical surgery”) is expected to reduce the burden of cancer treatment on patients and opens up possibilities of treatment without hospitalization.

*1 COINS
COINS (Center of Open Innovation Network for Smart Health) is an initiative under the Center of Innovation Science and Technology based Radical Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program (COI STREAM) of the Ministry of education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan and it’s a research center of an entirely new idea for developing “products and services that changes the future” by anticipating social needs in the future and integrating cutting-edge technologies, human resources and ideas form universities and private companies in and outside Japan. Our goal is to achieve a “smart health society” where people will be free from the threat of diseases without any regards to cost and access to the solution, gaining better health in their daily life.
