KINGSKYFRONT region is selected as Wellbeing Research Campus

On 29 September 2016, the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) selected the KINGSKYFRONT region of Kawasaki City, which includes Keio University Tonnomachi Town Campus, for the program known as the “global standard Wellbeing Research Campus for the creation of new industries by innovation of social system and technology”—the only world-class research complex hub in East Japan to be selected by JST.

The activities at this pioneering Wellbeing Research Campus will address the unprecedented global challenges associated with ‘super-aging societies’ by playing a leading role in improving the wellbeing of people all over the world. Notably, the major goal of this program is to establish a global research complex hub to create knowledge and services for attractive and rich lives.

In order to achieve these goals Keio University will be the core institution and
collaborate with local governments, universities, companies, and research institutes
located in the Tonnomachi region in the following four areas:

  • (1) Molecular measurement and nano-fabrication
  • (2) Regenerative-cell medicine and animal experiments
  • (3) Health care operations linked with artificial intelligence
  • (4) Robotics and medical equipment

The research complex will establish a “Person-centered Open Platform for wellbeing” and promote commercialization based on the achievements of interdisciplinary research. Furthermore, the research complex will follow an integrated approach to nurture entrepreneurs and experts in data science. The complex is committed to the creation of new research areas and industries by the acceleration, fusion, and innovative implementation of research and development in the life sciences, information technology, and manufacturing.
